Update for April 21, 2008

Welcome to Grogg's Blog!

Construction updates for Newton Public Schools' bond projects will be posted here as they become available. For additional information check out the district's bond construction site.

Construction of six additional classrooms at Northridge elementary will begin this week with the installation of a construction fence. After the fence is installed, construction trailers and machinery will be brought in. Once the concrete play areas are removed and some sewer lines are relocated, the dirt work will start in the area of the new addition.

Construction at Northridge is scheduled to continue throughout the summer and should be completed in December.

Farrell,
What will this mean in regard to moving classes/teachers/students?

Will any classroom movements be required to happen during the school year (August through May)?
Will all classrooms be moved during June & July?
and (finally!)
What district supports will be granted to any of those classroom teachers needing to move their classrooms--paid time? paid movers (packing&unpacking)?
This is a district concern which has been overlooked in the past. It is important that we support our excellent faculty and staff--so that we do not lose them in the shuffling.

Your comments are appreciated. We certainly want to make it as smooth a transition as possible for staff and students. Your concerns are being discussed with district administration and information will be posted as soon as it is available.

sam&sue,
In reply to your previous comment here is answer from Dr. Morton:

The district will commit to doing everything possible to ensure a smooth staff transition either to new space within a building or to a new building. Whenever possible, the district will allow flexibility of time while staff members are on contract. In addition, the district will provide boxes and other moving supplies to assist with the moves. When such transitions must occur outside of the regular contracted time, the district will work with staff members either to provide comp time or to pay a stipend to staff members involved in moving.
